When I heard that Billy Joe Shaver was playing in Southern California, I couldn't believe it. He's been one of my country heroes for a long time, and has written some of my favorite songs by Waylon Jennings, Elvis Presley, and Kris Kristofferson to name a few. I drove up to Huntington Beach with my lady and good buddy Shipwreck to see him play, and it was worth every penny. Billy played everything I wanted to hear (including Honky Tonk Heroes), and shows no signs of slowing down. He's 75 years old, still tours, and just put out a new record, Long in the Tooth, which is definitely worth picking up if you haven't already. Billy has been through many hardships, but nothing has stopped him from making music. He lost his son and lead guitarist in a heroin over dose, cut off two of his fingers in a lumber mill accident, and recently served time for shooting a man in the face outside of a bar in Lorena, TX. He doesn't play country music for the fame or the glamour, he plays it because that's what he loves to do. Thank you for the inspiration Billy. Live Forever.
Jake is very happy to announce that he will be doing a solo performance with his long time friend, Josh Brown, on Wednesday, Aug. 20th at the legendary Saloon in Encinitas, CA. Show starts at 9pm.
I've been making the rounds to my favorite record stores in San Diego and dropping off copies of my new CD. I'm proud to say that Tough Love EP is now available at Lou's Records in Encinitas. I've been buying records at Lou's for as long as I can remember, so I'm excited that my music is available at this legendary store. Support Lou's Records, and long live vinyl!
I appreciate good photography just as much as I do music. A long time friend of mine, Chad Foreman, takes killer photos and is one of the most bad ass people I know. I had the privilege of working for Chad when I was younger, and learned a lot from him about work ethic, respect, and how to get shit done. He's currently on a solo road trip from San Diego, CA to his hometown of Dothan, AL and back, but he's taking all back roads along the way, no freeways. Chad is documenting the entire trip with his camera, and is going to make a book when he returns. I sure as hell can't wait to see it. Follow his journey on instagram or check out his website. I want a signed copy when you get back, Chad!
A lot of people have been asking me if they can get Tough Love EP on iTunes, so I wanted to post a direct link. Click here if you want to make the purchase and support, thanks everyone!
I've known Graham since I was 13 years old. He's not only a genuine friend, but one hell of a singer & song writer. Both of our musical pasts are very similar, so it's awesome to see where he's at today and still call him a friend. If you're not familiar with his band, Nancarrow, do yourself a favor and check them out. They're some of the most talented players I've seen, and they put on an amazing live show. You can buy their music on iTunes or visit their website by clicking here. Keep on kickin' ass Graham!
